DISK DEFRAGMENTATION
Disk defragmentation is the process of uniting fragmented data in a hard disk or a storage device in order to make it work more efficiently.
- In which operative systems is disk defragmentation needed?
This technique is used in Microsoft Windows and MS-DOS to speed up the accessibility of the computer programs by putting them together.
But in some operative systems such as Mac OSX, Linux and Unix defragmentation is not needed because it is done automatically.
- Why is defragmentation used?
When you install a program it is stored in the hard disk but if you erase a program a gap is created so new programs will be installed in those gaps, no matter if they are separated. If the program is installed in separated cells it will work much slower. So defragmentation is used to organize this separated cells in order to accelerate the speed of the program.
